JSTOR (shortform of Journal Storage) was founded by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1994. It was created to address the challenges faced by libraries due to soaring prices and space constraints of academic journals. Initially JSTOR focused on digitizing back issues of journal but later expanded to include books, primary sources and current issues of journals in Humanities and Social Sciences. JSTOR is an interactive platform. It supports learning and research through a vast collection of secondary and primary sources. 


JSTOR gives access to full text searches of almost 2000 Journals and contains more than 12
million journal articles across 75 disciplines. Most researchers can reach JSTOR through a university or academic institutions, public libraries, research institutions, though independent researchers can read a limited number of articles each month for free with a MyJSTOR account. 


JSTOR can be searched through Intuitive search interface that allows users to search through a search bar by allowing user to locate articles, books and primary sources by title, author or keyword. Advance search option, workspace which helps saving article in personal folder, Citation tools, Text Analyzer i.e. an AI tool that suggest related document, Open access and free reading options. 


JSTOR works best for archival journals, books, and primary sources, while tools like Google Scholar and AI apps such as R Discovery offer broader, more current coverage. JSTOR has significantly improved access to academic resources by digitizing and providing online access to a vast collection of journals, books, and primary sources. It continues to evolve and expand its offerings, making valuable academic content accessible to a broader audience.
