So here’s the thing about Indian publishing: for all of this year, it’s been in the news – and it’s made big news.
In January, the Jaipur Literature Festival declared that it was going to expand beyond the Pink City to travel all the way to London and Colorado, and it did. In April, publisher Chiki Sarkar and four others resigned from Penguin Random House India to launch a new publishing house, Juggernaut, which will introduce pay-by-chapter reading on mobile platforms. In October, in addition to the countless (and counting!) literary festivals in the country, another one was held in – no, really – cyberspace.

Future Library' Reminds Us How Connected Books And The Environment Really Are

When we imagine libraries 100 years from now, many of us might picture sterile environments more like computer labs than book depositories -- or even cloud-based apps from which we’ll be able to access digital books without moving from our seats. It’s not a vision print book-lovers savor.
For artist Katie Paterson, books remain inextricably bound with the earth and the paper they’re printed on. This relationship inspired her project "Future Library," in which she's commissioning authors to help write 100 works to be kept in the trust for 100 years. They will be published in a limited-edition anthology in 2114, on paper made from 1,000 Norwegian spruce trees planted near Oslo last year.

In the age of the Internet, what can take the place of serendipitous discovery?
A few years ago, when I bought my first e-book on kindle, I was indeed awestruck by what seemed to be sheer magic. Within seconds of pressing, "Pay in Rupees", the book was delivered to my device, word for word. Without my having to leave my seat, I could now have a veritable collection, literally in my hand, within minutes. Yet, despite the ease and convenience of shopping for books online, I feel a whiff of nostalgia every time a brick and mortar bookstore downs its shutters. Even though the same books are now available online, browsing through bookstores and libraries has a distinctive flavour and an ineffable quality that cannot be replicated in the virtual world.
