Digital libraries, e-libraries, Kindle library all this sounds very interesting. With just one click one can have access to e-books, archives of one institute, or repositories of an institution. Publishers are also coming up with policy of pay per chapter on your mobile display. Recently Encyclopedia Britannica announced the launch of e-library in schools. As new technology is developing new modes of catering to the masses are also coming up.

So here’s the thing about Indian publishing: for all of this year, it’s been in the news – and it’s made big news.
In January, the Jaipur Literature Festival declared that it was going to expand beyond the Pink City to travel all the way to London and Colorado, and it did. In April, publisher Chiki Sarkar and four others resigned from Penguin Random House India to launch a new publishing house, Juggernaut, which will introduce pay-by-chapter reading on mobile platforms. In October, in addition to the countless (and counting!) literary festivals in the country, another one was held in – no, really – cyberspace.

Future Library' Reminds Us How Connected Books And The Environment Really Are

 |  By  Claire Fallon

When we imagine libraries 100 years from now, many of us might picture sterile environments more like computer labs than book depositories -- or even cloud-based apps from which we’ll be able to access digital books without moving from our seats. It’s not a vision print book-lovers savor.

For artist Katie Paterson, books remain inextricably bound with the earth and the paper they’re printed on. This relationship inspired her project "Future Library," in which she's commissioning authors to help write 100 works to be kept in the trust for 100 years. They will be published in a limited-edition anthology in 2114, on paper made from 1,000 Norwegian spruce trees planted near Oslo last year.

In the age of the Internet, what can take the place of serendipitous discovery?

A few years ago, when I bought my first e-book on kindle, I was indeed awestruck by what seemed to be sheer magic. Within seconds of pressing, "Pay in Rupees", the book was delivered to my device, word for word. Without my having to leave my seat, I could now have a veritable collection, literally in my hand, within minutes. Yet, despite the ease and convenience of shopping for books online, I feel a whiff of nostalgia every time a brick and mortar bookstore downs its shutters. Even though the same books are now available online, browsing through bookstores and libraries has a distinctive flavour and an ineffable quality that cannot be replicated in the virtual world.

Innovation are an important concepts in library today. In order to remain relevant to their patrons the library needs to constantly evolve itself. From traditional role of providing information, libraries are adopting and making use of web 2.0 services in order to be more accessible to the users. New technologies are impacting the day to day handling of library activities. Web 2.0 applications like blogs, IM, podcasts, RSS, social networks, tagging or social bookmarking, and wikis are now a part of library activities to involve the users or rather attract them to libraries.

An understanding of these components is needed as a general frame work in order to understand how libraries can use them to their fullest potential and where they may lead them in the near future.

Do e-books really threaten the future of printed ones?
In the digital age, the printed book is all but extinct, right? Wrong! Avid readers tell us why `real' books are still giving their e-book counterparts such stiff competition
In 1930, American avant-garde writer Bob Brown predicted that the printed book was bound for obsolescence. In his book The Readies, he says the time has come “to rid the reader of the cumbersome book“. He envisions a “machine that will allow us to keep up with the vast volume of print available today and be optically pleasing, “and hence inspired the e-reader. Unfortunately for Brown, 2015 has only just begun and some have already started to call time on the e-book.

Digital or electronic content, such as e-books, photographs on Web sites and electronic databases are subject to the same protections under the Copyright Act as non-digital, traditional or analog works. In addition, there are specific provisions relating to digital content in the 1998 amendment to the Copyright Act by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Many people assume that online content, or content found on Web sites, is not subject to copyright law and may be freely used and modified without permission. This is not true. Others think that online content is not protected unless it carries a copyright notice. This is not true either. Copyright law protects almost all content on the Web or in any other digital or electronic form. Therefore, permission is most likely required to use that work beyond fair use.

The steep price of high quality software prevents libraries from using them. To tackle this issue many library communities have developed software that are free of cost. They are known as free/open source software which are widely available on the internet, and can be downloaded, installed and distributed freely.
